Position: Archives Specialist

Job Summary:
The Archives Specialist is responsible for managing and preserving archival collections within the library, ensuring their accessibility and usability for researchers and users. The incumbent will play a crucial role in the selection, acquisition, arrangement, description, and preservation of archival materials, while adhering to established standards and best practices.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Evaluate, select, and acquire archival materials based on the library's collection development policy and strategic goals.
2. Appraise and assess potential archival donations, considering their historical, cultural, and research value.
3. Arrange and describe archival collections using appropriate archival principles and standards, ensuring accurate and comprehensive documentation.
4. Create finding aids, inventories, and other descriptive tools to facilitate access and retrieval of archival materials.
5. Implement preservation strategies and techniques to ensure the long-term durability and usability of archival collections.
6. Collaborate with the Library Director and other stakeholders to develop and implement policies and procedures for archival management.
7. Provide reference assistance and research support to library users seeking access to archival materials.
8. Stay informed about emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in archives and records management.
9. Participate in outreach activities, including presentations, workshops, and exhibitions, to promote the library's archival collections.
10. Assist with the digitization of selected archival materials, ensuring appropriate metadata and quality standards are maintained.
Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Library and Information Science, Archival Studies, History, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
2. Proven experience (minimum 2 years) working with archival collections, preferably in a library or cultural heritage institution.
3. Demonstrated knowledge of archival principles, theories, and best practices.
4. Proficiency in archival arrangement and description methods, such as DACS, EAD, or other relevant standards.
5. Familiarity with preservation techniques for various formats, including paper-based materials, photographs, audiovisual media, and born-digital records.
6. Strong research skills and ability to assist users in locating and utilizing archival materials effectively.
7. Excellent organizational and time-management abilities, with a keen attention to detail.
8. Proficiency in using archival management systems and tools, as well as digital preservation software.
9. Knowledge of copyright and intellectual property issues related to archival materials.
10. Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with colleagues and interact with a diverse user community.
